Performing Local Singapore Courier Services – Life As A Courier Man

I have worked as a delivery man, courier and such jobs in Singapore. Here are some of my opinions of working at a courier company in Singapore. Actually, scratch that. I have worked at three different courier companies. Out of those 3, I believe my most pleasant experience till date is at PCA Masters (

The first company I worked at is Network Courier. One of the older firms in Singapore, at that time, I was working as a bike rider. Although the work hours were quite decent – only Mondays to Fridays and occasionally Saturdays, it seems like very little pay, considering how I will be exposed to the weather elements. I cannot disclose nor share the exact amount I was paid, but I will say that it sounded like a decent salary at that time, but certainly not in 2016 with the rising costs in Singapore’s living standards. However, working there taught me a lot of things, like customers’ expectations of a courier e.t.c. It was there where I learnt that customers don’t really care as long as you get the job done, and if you get the job done. In my opinion, it was not tough to work as a delivery rider, but it was getting boring, and over time, to compete, the company reduced prices and challenged other competitors by becoming more of a postal service model. This did only increased my workload, and I felt there was no real value added to the end customer as it is becoming the same as postal service. Thus I left.

My next job was at a tiny subcontractor firm. Basically, this company gets its revenue from other larger and more reputable courier companies. I find that the job here is more interesting, because the clientele rotates more than the fixed ones for Network, but one problem is that the company charged its customers too low, and ended up going bust… Sad me.

Right now, my current job is at a local courier company PCA Masters. So far, my most pleasant working experience (from a courier’s point of view) is at PCA Masters. They give lots of flexibility (Hint: I don’t even need to go for a monthly or bi-weekly meeting to get paid. I simply get paid automatically because the admin/finance team will automatically calculate my payout and transfer me the money immediately). One thing about PCA Masters you may note is that they’re very strict about punctuality and customer support to their customers. If you cannot adhere to that, do not work there. Otherwise, it’s a great place to work at (if you consider ‘place’, considering you don’t even ever need to report to ‘work’).

I think working as a courier in Singapore can be a fulfilling and fun experience, but make sure to work at the right company – the wrong one will bring you lots of troubles, while the right one will pay you well while providing you lots of flexibility in your work. I would overall give the courier industry in Singapore (from a career’s point of view) a 4.3 stars out of 5 stars. If you find the right courier company, like I have, then it can be a 4.5 or even 4.7 stars!

How To Find A Suitable Singapore Courier Company For Your Deliveries

As I mentioned in my previous post, it’s good to outsource your courier deliveries. However, this does not mean that every courier company will be suitable for you. Even if a particular company had excellent service for you, doesn’t mean it’s suitable for you. Here’s some explanation why.

There are mainly two types of companies in Singapore which I highly recommend to outsource their courier deliveries – E-commerce companies as well as regular companies. Both types of firms have very different requirements when it comes to deliveries.

First of all, when it comes to E-commerce companies, they need to lower the cost of shipping or local delivery as usually this delivery cost is passed forward to their customers. Most customers would prefer paying a lower price and receiving their items slightly later than normal. Therefore, if you’re distributing products and have an E-commerce business, then you should look for delivery companies which specialize in E-commerce product distribution and delivery services. These are usually companies which will aggregate orders and redistribute out products over the next few working days. Additionally, as time is usually not an issue, re-deliveries can be conducted at low costs as the delivery company can simply bypass the area a few days later without making a special trip down.

Next, there will be regular companies which need to deliver and courier many documents, parcels, cheques and contracts on a daily basis. These documents are almost always time sensitive in nature, and need to reach particular destinations and/or personnel within a certain period of time. If you were to look for a E-commerce delivery company for your purpose, you’re going to have a bad time. In such cases, you would need to look for a delivery firm which specializes in local same day courier services in Singapore. They are different from E-commerce distribution companies as they specialize in local same day deliveries.

The key is to know what type of service you actually require, then decide on the company and the pricing. Without deeply understanding what you really need, you cannot truly find a delivery company in Singapore which actually fulfills your needs.

Should Your Company Outsource To A Courier Company Or Hire Own Dispatch?

Hiring a full time staff or outsourcing to a courier company is a common question that business owners ask themselves and their top executives. This is the reason being that in the past, few companies in Singapore offered such services to other companies. However for the last 10 to 15 years, many accounting, courier, and business to business services companies have popped up, serving the needs of businesses usually more effectively than any in house employee can perform. This is because these companies specialize in that one job function, and are able to have much more experience doing it as well as economies of scale.

If you want to hire a full time dispatch rider in Singapore, you need to pay them at least around $1500 and when you add up all the workman compensation, CPF contributions, transport allowance along with any administrative costs, it will be around $2000. Unless you have over 150 to 200 deliveries a month, there is simply more economies of scale by engaging a dedicated courier company. This is because most local urgent or same day courier services cost between $10 to $25 per location. Witht that being said, even if you have 10 deliveries per working day in Singapore, which is about 200 deliveries a month, you would only incur around $1000 to $2500 if you had engaged a courier company. Not only would you either save money, you would have saved a lot of effort and time otherwise needed to be spent on conducting administrative and human resource related work!

However, of course, it is not without cons. Hiring a courier company can and will make your life easier – provided you pick the right firm to work with. Just like hiring a dispatch rider, picking the wrong company to partner with in Singapore would be disastrous. This is the reason why some good courier companies in Singapore like publicly reveal their reviews as they’re as good as they claim they are, and they also allow for trial credit periods. If you like it, continue, if you don’t, stop using them at no additional cost.

Working with the right courier company can be a great delight, as I have for my businesses. I simply outsource it. However, I must also warn you to take this matter seriously, and treat the courier company’s responsibility, accountability and responsiveness as far more important criteria than any other thing. I have seen people lose items due to irresponsible couriers or worry incessantly by picking a cheap courier only to realize they never deliver on their promises.

Recommended courier companies in Singapore

A lot of companies will fall into the broad umbrella of logistics. However, in this article, we’ll only look at courier service companies – namely companies which specialize in same day local deliveries within Singapore. Courier services differ mainly from postal service in that they pick up the item from you and they will usually get it delivered within the same day or even within just a few hours.

First of all, for van delivery service, CSLC is a good choice. Established for quite a number of years, they specialize in van delivery services. Generally, the vans they use are Toyota Liteace and Hiace size. This means that items which are less than 150cm in length, 150cm in height and 150cm in width would be able to be transported by them. Items which are larger than that would require moving services, and moving companies generally use large lorries to move these items.

Second of all, if you need a small parcel and/or document dispatch courier service in Singapore, check out PCA Masters. Or if you want, check out their Facebook page. Specializing in same day document and small parcel deliveries, they have been growing from strength to strength based on solid customer service.

Third of all, if you need to deliver items for your E-commerce business in Singapore, then I would say use either Speedpost Ecommerce arm services or try Ninjavan. One of these two would be ideal, as both are among the better and stronger players which seem sustainable in the industry. There are other players which have fallen out of grace terribly like Zyllem and many others. When it comes to Ecommerce deliveries, stick to the well known ones. Similar to the other types of courier services if you require them instead.

Hopefully the above post will help you better select the right courier company for your company’s needs. Let me know if you need more help at or simply comment below……!

Courier Service Vs Postal Service

Why are more consumers in Singapore turning to courier companies for their deliveries instead of the old and outdated postal service? Reasons are aplenty, and here are some of the best:

– First of all, there is accountability when it comes to courier services. If a courier firm picks up the item and they indeed have delivered the item to the intended recipient, as they would need to get the intended recipient to sign off or stamp on the consignment note as proof of delivery.

– Second of all, a Singapore courier service company will dispatch a rider or driver to your exact location and pick up your item. You don’t even need to walk to the office’s door if you want to! You can even get a courier firm to dispatch the rider all the way to your desk at no extra cost. Such great convenience is the reason why many companies are resorting to using courier services instead of the old fashioned and outdated postal service.

– Third of all, most companies in Singapore (financial, medical and shipping companies) require documents and parcels to be delivered fast, and within the same day. Postal services take at least one to two working days to complete.

– Next, there are more and more courier companies these days, and all of them are competing on either pricing or service quality. Some courier companies like PCA Masters truly provide the whole package – attractive pricing with phenomenal customer service. Check them out here.

– Also, in a time driven city-state society like that of Singapore, people want speed. Businesses want speed too. This is the reason why postal services are getting less popular.

– Finally, hiring an in house dispatch rider is very expensive if you need only 10 to 30 deliveries a month. Chances are, you’ll save yourself much more time, effort and money by engaging and outsourcing your deliveries to a local courier company in Singapore.
